Historical Significance: The Half-Mast Protocol
A crucial moment in the history of flying the American flag at half-mast occurred on March 1, 1954, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed the first official policy. This practice aimed to pay respect to the memory of principal officials, former officials of the US government, and Governors of the States, Territories, and possessions.
In contemporary times, the tradition extends to various solemn occasions. In 2020, President Donald Trump ordered the flag to fly at half-mast to honor American citizens who lost their lives to COVID-19. The President’s message conveyed solidarity, stating, “Our Nation mourns for every life lost to the coronavirus pandemic, and we share in the suffering of all those who endured pain and illness from the outbreak.”
Regardless of the reason, the sight of the US flag at half-mast serves as a powerful reminder that, in unity, we stand together as fellow Americans.
